First Voices 2020 – An Evening of Indigenous Cinema!

Join Cinema Politica Concordia for First Voices – An Evening of Indigenous Cinema, in collaboration with First Voices Week Concordia. Working with the theme of WAKE UP!: Restorying the Land, we begin with shorts about land violation and protection, followed by THE FIFTH REGION, which considers the lives of urban Inuit who must contend with lives away from their ancestral lands.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Gabriel Nuraki Koperqualuk and protagonist Nancy Saunders (THE FIFTH REGION). The evening will be hosted by Inuk filmmaker and visual artist Stephen Agluvak Puskas.

This screening is part of First Voices Week Concordia. Admission is by donation ($5-10 suggested). All proceeds will be donated to the Unist’ot’en Camp. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Childcare provided on site by the Montreal Childcare Collective with 24 hour notice (https://childcarecollective.wordpress.com/about/ )

*This screening will exceptionally take place in the D.B. Clarke Theatre in Concordia’s Hall building, 1455 blvd de Maisonneuve West.*

INVASION

INVASION is a new film about the Unist’ot’en Camp, Gidimt’en checkpoint and the larger Wet’suwet’en Nation standing up to the Canadian government and corporations who continue colonial violence against Indigenous people.

A personal film paralleling Canada’s extraction industry and its detrimental effects on the land and Indigenous peoples with the booming child apprehension Industry currently operating in Canada.

THE FIFTH REGION

Two youth raised in southern Canada explore the complexities of what it means to be a young urban Inuk growing up under the shadow of the Sixties Scoop and the residential school system.
